In Ukraine’s current economic situation, people can’t afford to take care of animals. Our work includes providing medical aid for people’s pets, rescuing wild animals from private zoos, rehabilitating wildlife, and sterilizing and vaccinating stray dogs and cats in the country.

One way to show concern for God’s creatures and support for the Pope’s call to action regarding ‘our common home’, is to sign my petition asking the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales to establish a Committee to address the moral aspect of our treatment of animals.

The fur industry has been condemned for the animal cruelty, environmental destruction and the dangers to human health it entails. As a result, Europe is gradually adopting a more fur free stance. Will China follow?

Pope St. Pius V described bullfights as “a spectacle for demons rather than men.” As a practicing Catholic, I am saddened to say that the moral aspect of our treatment of other creatures is a part of Catholic teaching that our Catholic leaders have long neglected. Pope Francis is trying to put that right. Let’s take advantage of that and ask him to condemn bullfighting.

Instead of contributing to the development of sustainable, healthy farming systems, veterinarians have become servants of the industrial farming machine. Vets no longer see animals as their clients, they see the person who signs their salary check. We need vets to rediscover their original mission – animal welfare. Vets have the power to change the system for good. It’s hard to understand why medical professionals who specialize in treating animals actively contribute to their pain and terror.
