POETRY: For Love of This Earth
There is more beauty
Than your heart can ever hold
In a swan’s neck, a raccoon’s hand
In the song of a thrush
In sunlight through leaves in thick, green forests
…

Once upon a time, there was a Little Planet. She was the fairest in all the Universe and she was the Mother of Life. And all Life worshiped at her Altar for she nurtured every living thing and everywhere was a lush abundance of Beauty and Harmony…
The older I am
The less interested I am
In the petty affairs of men
And the more
I love Earth
And all her other creatures
And systems and seasons…
Earth’s green skin is velvet today
With the mist on it
Crushed velvet with her children’s pawprints
…
Come on, Gaia,
Fight back
With your floods, fire, and mighty winds
Reveal
For an instant
The magnitude of your wrath…
Unveil that face
That gave us Dominion
To kill and conquer and burn
Whose hymns of praise
Are sung from books
That are bound in blood and skin.

Once, long ago, the peoples of the Earth worshiped the animals. They perceived them to be magical creatures, supernatural beings, full of light, and Mystery. Their beauty was a source of inspiration and the people sought to emulate animals…
River of ice
River of sky,
River awakening
Swollen with meltwater
Blind stirrings in your weed-green belly.
…
Once
There were rivers of birds
Flowing, swirling,
Connecting light and beauty
Between Earth and Sky.
…
Yes, there is beauty
Enormity of beauty and truth.
But there is immense pain and suffering.
The wind and the clouds
And the rain
Bring messages, you know…
When the birds are gone
Will we care?
Will we sit outside
And mourn the quiet?
…
Come with me
To the forest’s heart
Where the green tapestry
Starred with jeweled birds
And fragrant flowers
Enters the blood
And calls you home…
