Charles Wartenberg, founder of the Animal Kingdom Foundation, passed away in December 2016. He will be remembered for his tireless advocacy and transformation of animal welfare in the Philippines.
Pagasa the dog, named after a Filipino word for Hope, was a city dweller with a tumor on his face, living in the streets and barely subsisting on garbage food. He is now with Animal Kingdom Foundation after a group of well-meaning folks took him in and cared for him temporarily.
One has to be part of the raiding team to understand the cruelty inflicted to the dogs. Their muzzles shut tied by strings, their tongues swollen because they have bitten them when their snouts were forcefully tied, dead ones piled up on by the weak ones and the stench, it never leaves you; it is as horrible as the sight before you. AKF almost always bury half of the number of dogs recovered from these raids.
