MISSION
 To improve life for animals in Nepal
STRATEGY
 HART aims to return all animals to their community. It has bases in Pokhara and Bharatpur, two
major Nepali towns. Kennels and operating facilities have been established in both bases to enable
neutering programmes and provide basic treatment for injured and sick dogs.
 All programmes are carried out with the approval and assistance of relevant local authorities, both
town councils and the District Livestock Offices.
 Repetition of programmes is essential to build up confidence in the community and to maintain
effectiveness. High visibility annual vaccination programmes ensure this.
 HART works with other organisations with similar interests including other NGOs, academic
institutions and government departments.
METHODS
 Clinics set up in Pokhara and in Bharatpur in the compounds of the DLSO.
 In Pokhara through a series of vaccination, neutering and awareness campaigns the dog population
is stabilised and overall health improved. Programmes are evaluated by annual dog census and
community surveys. No culling since 2010.
 Work in Bharatpur started in 2011 and annual vaccination, neutering and awareness programmes
have taken place. Programmes are evaluated by annual dog census and community surveys. No
culling since HART’s arrival.
 Ongoing collaborative work with vet school, a Faculty of the Agriculture and Forestry University, to
improve the training of Nepali vets.
 Country-wide neuter/vaccinate and treatment clinics held in conjunction with local authorities.
Demand for these increases annually as attitudes to dogs become more enlightened.
 Ongoing collaborative work with other animal welfare NGOs in Nepal .
 Contacts established with research establishments in DPM field to ensure best current practice
used and academic analysis of results potentially available.
