It’s October
In Canada
And I’m still sitting outside
On my deck.
The world is warming
And who knows
How long this beauty
Will continue.
The sun is low in the trees.
Only the tops of the spruce and pine
Are radiant.
Down here
There is deep shadow.
Down here
In this mixed boreal forest
There is peace
As darkness descends.
A lone chickadee
Flits to the feeder.
Not a breeze
Rustles the popple.
The blue flies
Hover and float.
Winter is coming.
