Cats and other so-called invasive species are being blamed for driving native species to the brink of extinction, but such a thing only happens when the native species is on its knees already because of poor resource management in which habitat depletion by livestock ranching and fishing comes first, consumptive use of the at-risk species by hunters and trappers is permitted, and pollution and now climate change may make native species unable to thrive in their natural habitats. In the case of free-roaming cats, only eight seals are proven to have died by toxoplasmosis, while the number of seals who “have been found beaten to death on beaches, possibly because of pernicious rumors that the seals are to blame for depleted fishermen’s stocks” is not given. I am 100% in favor of pet animals being kept indoors, but for cats unlucky enough to be homeless, humane alternatives to mass slaughter should and can be arranged. Trap/neuter/return can be practiced more professionally, and feral cats can be adopted by people patient enough to tame them. Cruel treatment of these unfortunate animals is not acceptable.
