“People have devoted their whole life to conservation, controlling weeds in remote areas, building fences, controlling feral pigs and animals that destroy the forest. And thinking that you’ve done everything you can to protect these areas and something beyond your control comes—it can be very depressing” – yes, indeed, but learning that they are incapable of controlling nature is a long overdue lesson for conservationists. Evolution drives nature, and agents of evolution include migratory and feral animals who adapt and outcompete native species. Conservationists have been ruthless in persecuting these animals who found themselves in non-native habitats through no fault of their own, having been released or abandoned there by people to be used later as food sources or for the fun of hunting, or – often – to serve as predators of other out-of-control exotic species. Now we find outselves in a position that we cannot even guess which animals may survive the next few decades because of climate change. Conservationists, shed your arrogance, cultivate compassion, and learn to respect nature, because nature will survive, even if we don’t.
