Live-animal exporters are preparing to back a major change in national animal-welfare policy to ensure the survival of their controversial $1.5 billion industry.
The Australian Live Exporters Council met late yesterday to vote on a rescue plan that would back the appointment of an independent inspector-general by the federal government to oversee and regulate all live-cattle and live-sheep exports.
