People who care about animals should have more than a suspicion by now that the pet trade exists purely to profit from selling sentient creatures who are either bred under industrial conditions or captured from the wild. For each animal offered for sale to the public, a certain number of animals are casualties of the industry. Even as some pet stores have made a responsible switch from offering puppy and kitten mill animals for sale to allowing rescued dogs and cats to be offered for adoption in the stores, many times more small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish are offered up for cash with no questions asked as to the buyers’ intentions for the animals or the conditions under which the animals will be forced to exist. Many of them die from poor care or mistreatment, and some are turned loose when they are no longer wanted. This Care2 story alerts us to the end result of releasing goldfish into bodies of water, and most of us know what released reptiles have done to the Everglades. Released exotic species, including cats, may be brutally persecuted by conservationists. The pet trade is not a cuddly, sentimental industry that deserves kind treatment by animal lovers.
