Catching wild fish in the sea to spend the rest of their lives in glass tanks is a violation of nature–not to mention the large percentage of fish who die during capture, transport, and retail sale. But captive breeding of wild species isn’t ethical either, because existing in a deprived and diminished environment robs animals of quality of life. Our desire for pets should not come at the expense of the rights endowed by nature to all living creatures. If we truly want the companionship of animals, there are more than enough dogs and cats and other domesticated or already tame animals who need our care and who are dying for the lack of it. There are very few ethically valid reasons to breed animals.
