A “breed” of dog is not a species. A breed does not need to be preserved – especially dogs bred for gimmicks that often manifest in deformities or physical handicaps, or breeds which for thousands of years were specifically bred to kill other dogs and other animals such as bears and bulls in sadistic gambling spectacles or, in the case of bulls, as a prelude to slaughter that was intended to improve the taste or texture of the meat. Dog-breeding proponents refer to proposals to ban breeding as the dog-version of genocide. But how can one be advocating any sort of “-cide” when one is not calling for anyone to be killed, but for dogs to be spayed or castrated so that they do not breed? And how can it be any sort of dog-ocide to ask that the dogs not be sexually reproduced by human-controlled breeding, which is the only way to maintain a dog breed? A dog identifies as a DOG and not as a breed of dog. The preference of a sexually intact dog of any breed is to mate freely with dogs of any breed or no breed.
