Donkeys are among the groups of animals whose massive populations worldwide are treated most cruelly. The latest schemes by Asian countries (led by China) to import donkeys from Africa and the Middle East for brutal slaughter and skinning so that the hides may be used for beauty and health products adds another layer of acute suffering for these animals. But donkeys are seldom humanely treated no matter where they end up dying, and death comes after years of beatings, over-work, and under-feeding. Already the skins of slain donkeys are being exported to Chinese markets, but at least they are spared the long and miserable sea journeys to east Asian ports. To stop this trade, and prevent overseas live transport of donkeys for slaughter, animal advocates who praise the donkey for its role in service to humanity should stop supporting and enabling the breeding of donkeys for lives of slavery and deaths that always involve terrible suffering. Let people pull their own weight and let people – especially grown men – walk on their own two feet instead of riding tiny donkeys. Charities could support the design of carts with improved weight-bearing capacity or solar-powered vehicles, and they could subsidize a transition away from donkey-power.
