If large brains can be maladaptive under pressure, I wonder if that might explain why Homo sapiens prevailed over Neanderthals, which actually had bigger brains than our species? Perhaps the costs of their greater braininess – fewer offspring and higher energy needs – gave them a competitive disadvantage, especially coupled with the climate changes of the late Ice Age.
