I wasn’t really sure if I liked Bojack Horseman or not, but Season 2 Episode 5 left me highly impressed with the strength and nuance of its animal rights message. It touched on the extreme cruelty of factory farming (“a real-life dystopian horror show in which we are the monsters”), the artificiality of “friend vs. food” distinctions, and even why free range farming is still intrinsically problematic. I wouldn’t have expected a show like Bojack Horseman to attempt a serious animal rights message, given its generally frivolous themes of fame and vanity, and setting in which humans and anthropomorphic animals live side-by-side as equals. That it tried and succeeded, with darkly humorous yet poignant results, deserves praise on behalf of the writers and gives reason enough for me to finish the second season, despite my reservations about the show overall.
