Chickens form relationships with other animals – other chickens, of course, but also members of other species with whom the chicken lives in proximity. My beloved rescue-chicken, Klinka, now deceased, was the boss of a household that included numerous cats and dogs. She became my dear friend, and on her “deathbed” would respond to my voice even though she appeared to be otherwise comatose. From my friendship with Klinka, I glimpsed the being-ness of chickens. I don’t believe that being rented to strangers for temporary residency – such as in the scheme described in this article – would result in a high level of welfare for chickens, though it is likely much better than life in a factory egg farm.
