Dear Mr Anies Baswedan:

Re: End the use of animals in performances at Ancol Dreamland

We are writing on behalf of the Asia for Animals Coalition in support of the ‘Movement to End Animal Circuses in Indonesia’ and their call to end the use of animals in the circus performances at Ancol Dreamland in Jakarta.

We are pleased to hear that members of the ‘Movement to End Animal Circuses in Indonesia’ met with representatives of the Agency for Development of Regional Owned Enterprises, part of the Government of Jakarta, on July 18th 2018, to discuss this issue, and that your staff understand that animal circus performances are a form of animal cruelty. We are also reassured to hear that, as the majority shareholder, the Government of Jakarta will be discussing this with PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol and other shareholders to identify actions that can be taken to end the exploitation of animals in circus performances.

The Asia for Animals Coalition is strongly opposed to this exploitation. The abusive and exploitative treatment of animals used in animal performances at Ancol is a major concern, given the techniques we know to be used to control the animals during training and performances, and the poor living conditions for these animals.

Globally, we are seeing an ever-growing number of countries banning the use of wild animals in circus performances, with over 50 countries already having passed progressive laws to outlaw such practices. Indonesia’s ongoing support of animal exploitation in the name of entertainment in circuses runs contrary to growing concerns about the unacceptable and abusive techniques relied on at such venues.

On behalf of our members globally, we appeal to you as Governor of Jakarta to join the international movement against the use and abuse of animals in performances, and to take strong and immediate action to put an end to this exploitation at Ancol.
